ShredLights SL-200 for Onewheel – Comprehensive Review

Picture this, you’re an avid board sports participant with a day job and little to no free time in the sun. You would love to take part in your board sport but don’t have the time. Or maybe you’re a teen that can’t get enough time on your board before the day runs out. Regardless of your specific predicament, there may be a reasonable solution to getting some shred time AFTER the sunsets. Riding at night can be fun but also brings a few new dangers. As I recently proved to myself when I rode my OneWheel Pint into a pothole… Now, some may ask why a flashlight in hand isn’t good enough? The fact is, it takes you a bit out of your element. A proper solution would be Shred lights. I first received my Shred Lights this last December 2019. I can say they are lightyears better than keeping a standard flashlight in hand.

What’s in the box?

Shred Lights is a company making high-quality flashlights for your nighttime board needs. Their lights are durable, bright, and water-resistant for when you get into the winter seasons. Buying a stand-alone light from Shred Lights will come with a 200 Lumen light in either bright white or deep red. The red lights are intended to keep your tail end lit up for visibility sake. Opening the box you’ll find a double-headed micro USB cable, an S-lock mount with either 3M velcro attachment or 3M tape, and of course the light itself. Now depending on what you’re riding, you have a few different options for your board.

Shred Lights have a plethora of packages available. OneWheel riders have individual options and a few combo packs ranging price. If you want to keep it simple you can buy single lights with different mounting options. The company makes mounts for flat surfaces, curved surfaces, Go-Pro mounts, or even their action clip to mount on to your jackets or backpacks. The best value buy is the combo pack coming with two red lights and two white lights with 4 flat mounting options. The “Night Ops pack” comes with three white lights, three red lights, three charging cables, two arched mounts, an action clip, four varying truck mounts, and a bundle of stickers.

Mounting Options

Shred Lights have thought of what seems to be all the mounting options possible for our twilight hour riding. Their advertised mounting places are located near the front of the side rails. This leaves a poorly lit spot in the middle of the boards’ path. Honestly, there aren’t a whole lot of alternative options for mounting on a OneWheel. It made sense to follow their lead in mounting placement as the other mounting options are poor. Mounting to your fender will only get the light blocked by your legs. And placing a light below the footpad is going to get it ripped off in no time. l recommend getting a helmet mount to make up for the less illuminated area in the middle of your riding path.

Product Durability

An issue you may be concerned about is the durability of flashlights. Being mounted to the side of a board leaves the lights vulnerable to get smashed into the pavement. Luckily Shred Lights has created a durable light for our hobby. They’ve continued that idea of durability by encasing their lights in a rubber layer that adds to its rugged nature. The rubber wrap also helps keep it at an IP 65 water and dust resistance. My personal lights have so far taken the abuse of my board flipping on its sides and hitting my lights. None of them have broken or even fallen off. That being said, I do see the 3D printed mount Shred Lights provide as a potential issue. They feel and have so far proven themselves very hardy. I would rather them provide something like an injection-molded plastic mount. Even if for nothing but peace of mind.

Brightness

When it comes to brightness, the pedestrian lights that you have around the house aren’t going to compete. Riding at night is plenty accessible with any light. But, nothing is quite as comfortable as riding with bright white lights down an unlit trail. Shred lights provide more than ample light for your late-night riding. To compare, your average flashlight today comes in at around 100 Lumens on average. Shred lights come in at double your average lights brightness hitting 200 Lumens. This bright light can light up your desired destination. Beyond visibility for yourself, having bright lights also helps others see you. The Onewheel LED lights come with less powerful settings ranging from 25, 100, and to its peak 200 Lumens. The adjustable brightness is convenient for riding in busy areas with others. All variations of the lights also come with flashing options to capture the attention of drivers. Accidents involving cars hitting boarders are uncomfortably common. Most boarders have either had a close call or even been hit. Having access to some flashing red lights facing your backside could keep you safer while you ride.

Compatibility

A large selling point of this product is the ability to swap out lights with different mounts. If you forgot to charge one of your lights, no worries you’re other light will click in fine. Do you want to get something other than a OneWheel or E-skate? You won’t have to bother getting a new light. A mount for your new ride is all you need to use the same lights you’ve been enjoying already. The newest iteration of Shred Lights can be swapped into any of the mounts they sell. You don’t have to worry about compatibility between a light you bought for your helmet or lights you bought for your OneWheel.

Build Quality

As mentioned above these lights and accessories are built to last. The small package manages to keep things light and efficient. They take up much less space than your conventional flashlight with a brighter than average result. The light comes in at 50 grams so even mounting one on your helmet isn’t going to be a concern for your neck. The rubber wrapped light comes with two audible clicking buttons to control its burst and brightness settings. Click either button to turn on the light and move through the 6 settings on the lights. To turn it off you can either tap both buttons at the same time or hold one side for one and a half seconds. The two tactile switches on either side of the lights are satisfying both for your ears and fingers. You’ll know that you are pressing the buttons accurately and quickly when you’re in a hurry. While the quality of the lights is superb, they bring one complaint to my mind. On a fairly new product, their use of micro USB type B seems a bit baffling. Type B is becoming outdated and replaced with the newer USB type C. It would be nice to see them keeping up with the tech so we don’t have to keep every type of charger option known to man.

Customer Service

ShredLights has so far proven to me to have an outstanding customer service. The package of Shred Lights and accessories I received came with a broken mount piece. While the broken clip was still usable, getting a broken product on arrival is both disappointing and unacceptable. Shred Lights were beyond helpful and fast in getting my replacement part out to me within only a few days of me asking. They didn’t question me and only asked how they could help. Customer service is something everyone can appreciate. While I hope I don’t need it again, I trust that they’ll be helpful the next time I need their help. That being said, if anything happens within 90 days of purchase you’ll still be within their generous warranty.

Wrapping it up with price

To get your hands on these durable lights it will cost you anywhere between $29.99 and $159.99. From their action clip mount package to their Night Ops pack, they have something that can help you. There are 6 different styles of mounts they offer for your style of shred. If you’re unsure about the lights, a simple helmet-mounted light may be the best for you coming at a little over $30. Shred Lights provides many entry-level prices. If you have the cash to spend, I sincerely recommend opening your wallet for their Combo pack selling at $99.99. It’ll give you plenty of visibility for yourself and those around you to keep you safe.
